This summer CSM, Skyline, and Cañada will be celebrating their 16th year of College for Kids, a program that provides fifth through ninth graders a variety of academic courses including creative writing, foreign language and more.
"This is the 16th aniversity of the camp and we are both very excited and proud about that. This program has helped and continues to help kids get introduced to the college experience. It let's get a taste of what the college life is actually like," Project Director for Community Education Lily Lau said.
Students will be able to create their own three period schedule where they could choose from a large selection of classes. "It gives the student an opportunity for them to learn what they want to learn, it's a taste of independence," said Lau.
We have some exciting new classes this year such as "Fun with Mandarin," which will have cooking demonstrations. There is an Origami and sushi Japanese class, "The Alternative Energy" engineering class.
"We decided to have this class especially because there is a greater concern for the environment," Assistant Project Director of Community Education Renee Khoury said. "And of course there are going to be sports class along with a fun for photography class. There are lots of interesting classes for kids."
"There are 400 students who have signed up for the program but we are hopping to get 500," said Khoury.
The program will take place on CSM from July 7-24, Monday through Thursday 1:30-4:50 p.m..
"College for kids is such an important opportunity for young students. It's so important for them to realize what their college options are and just getting used to the idea of going to college. College for Kids allows young children to taste of the experience of what the college experience and life is actually like," said Lau.
