Thia summer there is going to be less CSM at CSM. Building 5 will be gone entirely, the pools closed, one main entrance gone, the quad between Bldg. 5 and 9 will be under construction, all while Bldg. 2 and 4 will under going modernization.

Rick Bennett, co-division head of Construction and Planning Department, said students will return to CSM in August to find the foundation of Bldg. 5 "Bldg. 5N is going to be a big farther south than what is currently in place," said Bennett.

The new Bldg. 5N will be constructed to the standards of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, LEED. Their standards are checklist of qualities a building must meet in order to be a green building. Recycling concrete is one way in which Bldg. 5 will be LEED certified, along with storm water management and alternative transportation.

A map of campus for next semester shows half of Lot 6 behind Bldg. 15 will be closed along with much of Lot 3, located behind Bldg. 5.

The pools next to Bldg. 5 will be drained and worked on until Bldg. 5 is rebuilt. Randy Wright, Dean of Aquatics at CSM, said.

Current plans call for the space between Bldg. 5 and 9 to have smaller fountains installed along with more grass space and a new walkway.

The final construction project starting this summer is the modernization of Bldg. 2 and 4. The two art buildings will have asbestos removed. Classrooms in the two buidlings will become Smart Classes, with Wi-Fi and permanent projectors. Finally, an elevator will be installed behind buildings 2 and 3 for wheelchair access.

The intention of all this construction is to bring CSM into the 21st century, said Art Professor Janet Black.

"Many of the buildings were built in the 70's," said Bennett, "It has held up remarkably and we are choosing designs that, while modern, fit the overall look of the school."

Placement of Bldg. 5N and 10N at a 45 degree angle to the current layout of the school is to create a 3rdentrance into the campus, Bennett said.

Renovation work on Bldg. 2, 4, 14 will be completed by January 2009.

Then Bldg. 10 and 11 will be torn down. 10N will host all media programs, the bookstore, the administration, among other offices.
