Two individuals breaking into a car parked in lot 15 on Tuesday, September 9 at 12:15 p.m. were spotted by Brian Tupper.
Sergeant Pat Davy said he passed by in his vehicle with Officer Linda Davy and "thought something looked suspicious." They drove over to assist Officer Tupper when he began to chase the suspects. Sergeant Davy says he parked his vehicle one row over from the scene of the crime and started chasing as well. The chase didn't last long because one of the men tripped over a cement parking block and was held in custody until the San Mateo Police Department showed up.
"The burglars had gained entry by force (into the car) and removed property," Mike Brunacardi of the SMPD said.
The second suspect fled and was found later at his residence.
"(It) was quite an extensive search, but through various means he was tracked down," Brunacardi said.
The suspects are Andre Hussain, 19, and Mitnesh Reddy, 18. Both from San Bruno and CSM students, Steve Wagstaffe, district attorney said. They have been charged with three counts of felony for auto burglary - two at CSM and one for burglarizing a car in Skyline.
"They were on a bit of a spree," Wagstaffe said. The items they had stolen were found in one of their cars, and included a guitar, along with other small property.
When they were booked at the San Mateo county jail, Reddy paid $25,000 bail. His first court appearance is Oct. 16, according to Wagstaffe. Hussain pleaded not guilty and was appointed a lawyer by the court. Someone then posted a $25,000 bail bond and his settlement conference took place Sep. 18.
"No adult record," said Wagstaffe, when asked if either teenagers had previous records.
Mug shots of the suspects were not released because identification by photo was still needed, according to Sergeant Bob Szelenyi of the SMPD.
