Fiesta de La Salud will be hosted Monday, Sept. 22, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m at the upper quad, near the kiosk, by CSM Health Services . This event, geared toward the Hispanic/Latino American student population, will be focusing on diabetes education and prevention.
"The Fiesta de La Salud will provide students with music, healthy food, and information," said Sharon Bartels, health services coordinator.
A healthy taco salad and gazpacho are some of the diabetic friendly foods that will be available for students at the event.
"Norae Ferrera, a nutritionist from the San Francisco Nutrition Center, will also be attending the event to provide students with a workshop on diabetes," said Gloria D'Ambria, health services office assistant.
Ferrera will be providing educational diabetes information, including brochures and diabetic friendly recipes, adjacent to the event from 11:00 a.m. to noon. She will be conducting her lecture in both English and Spanish, so that all students will be able to acquire more information.
"People with diabetes not only have to worry about carbs, but fat content too; because once you have diabetes you are predisposed to have heart problems," said Bartels.
According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Diabetes Fact Sheet, 23.6 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes, but only approximately 17.9 million people have been diagnosed with the disease, leaving 5.7 million undiagnosed. Of the 23.6 million diagnosed with diabetes, 10.4% is composed of the Hispanic/Latino population.
"Diabetes is a major health concern for all, and this event is happening to get information out to students, to make them aware of diabetes, so that they can start making little changes."

This event looks great! Such a good idea when you look at the statistics. Hispanic Heritage month is a great time for cultural knowledge and events centered around that, but it's also great to have events like this centered around knowledge and awareness. (Continued…)
