A vigil was held on. Jan. 11 for former CSM linebacker William Robert Vatuvei at All Saints Catholic Church in Hayward.
"Last night's vigil, which began at 7 p.m., went on until after 11 p.m.," said All Saints liturgical coordinator Mari Kriege in a phone interview.

The financial aid office will be holding a free financial aid application workshop on Jan. 23 at the San Mateo Public Library located on 55 West 3rd Avenue.
The workshop is open to current CSM students and senior high school students. Parents are also welcome.

Fears of a gas leak Friday led to the evacuation of Bldg. 16. Emergency crews determined the real culprit was fumes from herbicide.
The fumes spread through the building at about 1:30 p.m.
"It smelled exactly like gasoline, and when you walked into the building your eyes started watering," said John Wells, Chief Public Safety Officer.

Former Bulldogs lineback Will Vatuvei was killed at 1:29 a.m. in the 27000 block of Orlando Avenue, according to Hayward Police.
Vatuvei was shot and killed while sitting in a parked car full of people.
According to Hayward police, a male passenger in an approaching car leaned out and shot at Vatuvei, who was in the driver's seat.

Despite giving up just one touchdown, the Bulldogs fell one point short of a state championship Dec. 12, losing at home to Mt. San Antonio College Mounties 7-6, to finish fourth on the national level 10-2.
Undaunted by heavy downpours lasting for more than three quarters of game time, fans came out in full force to support their teams; the crowd at College Heights Stadium was 3,723 strong.

The Committee on Instruction is considering changes to degree requirements because of the increased difficulty students will have in obtaining classes. It will be more difficult for students to get all the classes they need to graduate and the committee is trying to streamline that process, said Laura Demsetz, professor of engineering and chair for the Committee on Instruction.

H1N1 vaccine clinics have been held at CSM for two days from Nov. 23 to Nov. 25 for priority groups at no charge.
Due to vaccine shortages, clinics for administering vaccine have been held by the CSM health center on campus for priority groups such as pregnant women, health care and emergency personnel, anyone living with or taking care of infants six months or younger, anyone from six months to 24 years of age, and anyone from 25 to 64 with a chronic medical condition or weakened immune system.

A new smoking policy will restrict smoking to parking lots only starting Fall 2010.
The Smoking Task Force, chaired by Jennifer Hughes, vice president of student services, submitted the task force's recommendation at an Oct. 21 College Council meeting, said Hughes.

Pro Football Hall of Famer John Earl Madden, a CSM alumnus, was one of 13 Californians inducted into the California Hall of Fame on Dec. 1.
Madden, 73, was the offensive lineman for the Bulldogs in 1954 and 1955 before obtaining a scholarship to California Polytechnic State University where he graduated with BS and MS degrees in education in 1959 and 1961.
