MySpace blocked by campus labs

Issue date: 11/14/05 Section: News
An extremely popular website has been blocked or restricted at computer labs around the campus.
The website www.myspace.com, which has speedily gained popularity throughout the nation, has raised concerns at the different computer labs of CSM and at the college's library, for a few different reasons.

Students' use of the website has at times been abusive and obscene. Library director Lorrita Ford, said that the website is being restricted at the library because its use has lead to student traffic at this school's facility.

"We had situations where students would walk into the library and all the computers would be in use," said Ford.

Although the computers at the library are, at times, all being used, Ford stated that the issue took place more often during this semester, and she did her own research into the topic of Myspace.com.
"I asked students what websites were popular nowadays and it did come up quite often on students' answers," she said.

Following this, the library blocked the website during the week of Oct. 31 - Nov. 4, and saw significant decrease on traffic at the library.
"Computers were available for students most of the time," said Ford.

Besides forbidding students from accessing the computers, MySpace was causing disruptive behavior among students.

Ford said that there were occasions in which she would have to go up to groups of students and ask them to lower their voices

"They would sit in groups to look at one computer to talk about something on the website," said Ford.
MySpace is now available for access at the library.
However, MySpace and other social websites such as gaming and pornographic websites, among others, are not allowed, according to library computer restrictions, and their use may lead to loss of computer use privileges.

MySpace has also brought concerns to different computer labs around campus because of reasons similar to the ones at the library, as well as because of the website's content.
