Anyone who is interested in leadership can attend the Student Senate meetings Mondays from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and receive one credit. Students can sign up using WEBSMART.

The Associated Students of CSM (ASCSM) Student Senate has been very busy this semester since their first meeting in August.

They kicked off the year with a presentation from Sharon Bartels, R.N. and health services coordinator about Assembly Bill 982, the health services fee waiver.

This assembly bill has since passed and all students regardless of financial aid must pay the health fee starting in January, 2006.
President of the Student Senate Mario Medina made several appointments for vacancies in the Senate and on various committees.

Welcome Week was held in September to acclimate new students to the services provided on campus.
The Student Senate also coordinated fundraising efforts for Hurricane Katrina Relief by organizing several barbecues and a concert, scheduled for November.

"Funds collected by the ASCSM Student Senate for Hurricane Katrina relief will be donated to a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, non-profit organization working to help the victims of the disaster, or evacuees who are relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area," said ASCSM Associate Kalon Forrest.

The Multi Cultural Club hosted The Taste of Culture Event where students were able to taste delicacies from around the world.

Bldg. 5 renovations have been at the top of the Student Senate's concerns. The closure of Bldg. 5 will not only displace faculty and staff members but also students who congregate for a variety of purposes including a quick meal.

Current plans are to renovate Bldgs. 1, 5 and 6 in order to consolidate student services in a centralized facility near the entrance to campus, convenient to students, faculty, staff and visitors.

Once complete, the buildings will house Student Services, College Administration and related offices, the Bookstore, Student Activities, Student Government, and Food Services.

Renovations are expected to take 12-18 months according to Swinerton Incorporated. Faculty and Staff from Bldg. 5 will be relocated into trailers by Bldg. 9.

"Externally, Bldg. 5 will remain the same, but the interior will be completely different," said Steve Robison, coordinator of student activities.
