Patricia Ruth Benney, who worked at CSM in various positions until 2003, died March 16 of heart failure. She was 66.
Born February 18, 1940, Ms. Benney began working at CSM's Security department in 1992, eventually operating its information switchboard.
Ms. Benney was an avid fan of the school basketball team.
"She was known as the official cheerleader," said Michelle Warner, the women's basketball coach. "She would bring cowbells, clappers and other noisemakers and would show up to some away games."
"She would bring trinkets for the [women's basketball] team such as pens, visors or basketball ties," said Warner.
Before coming to CSM, Ms. Benney retired from Bay Meadows Race Track in 1992.
"If you worked at Bay Meadows, you knew who Pat was," said Peggy Morsi, paymaster. "She was real active with the softball, and bowling leagues that came from the Bay Meadows employees," Morsi said. Ms. Benney worked there for more than 20 years and held the positions of switchboard operator and assistant to the paymaster.
Ms. Benney raised a family in Coalinga, CA that includes sons Daniel, Douglas and Donald, and daughter Michele.
"She was always there for us kids," said Donald Pilakowski. "She was a giving person. She will be greatly missed by a lot people."
At the request of Ms. Benney there were no memorial services, and donations can be made to the Peninsula Humane Society and The Cancer Society.
