Several of Kelly's friends and admirers provided the former president with gifts during the ceremony. Speech Professor Kate Motoyama, who was born and raised in Hawaii, performed a Hula dance for Kelly. "That was an incredible gift," said Kelly.
Marylin Lawrence, general manager of KCSM and their staff made a video of Kelly thanking her for 14 years of service. Scenes from the video included Kelly dressed as the music artist Cher, singing before a CSM audience. Kelly, along with most of the audience laughed and smiled throughout the video.
Along with various CSM personnel that were in attendance, were other colleagues of Kelly from City College of San Francisco. Jackie Green and Sandra Handler, now retired from CCSF, worked along side Kelly when she was at CCSF. Green and Handler sang an original tailor made duet for their former colleague and friend.
The now retired presidents friendship wasn't solely with colleagues, but also with students.
"Shirley was so open to knew ideas," said CSM Graduate Candice Alfaro who now attends UC Berkeley. Alfaro took time out of her schedule to make it to Kelly's ceremony. "I met Shirley when I was in the student senate. I really got to know her well. She was always real supportive of the students," said Alfaro.
Though most of the ceremony had a festive tone, there were moments of sadness.
"From the very first day that I parked my car on this campus, I knew I felt right at home," said Kelly.
Kelly, who began her presidency in 2000, now leaves the path to the presidency to two candidates.
Jowel Laguerre and Michael Claire are the two final candidates for the presidency. Laguerre, Vice President of Academic Affairs at Truckee Meadows Community College located in Reno, Nevada, will hold his forum in the Choral room in Bldg. 2 from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14.
His opponent Claire, Vice President of Instruction, will hold his own forum the following day in the same room and time.
