Smokers and nonsmokers alike are urged to attend the college council meeting this Wednesday at 2:15 p.m. in Bldg. 1 Rm 115 to discuss the future of smoking on and around campus.

"There will definitely be a recommendation given on what the new policy should be," said Michael Claire, CSM president.

The smoking policy that currently states "smoking is prohibited in all indoor locations, and within a distance of twenty feet from any doorway" is not good enough for some students and faculty members that have smoke creeping into class rooms from time to time.

Since March 7 the sixteen-member college council, which represents various groups within the college such as administrators, students, faculty and classified employees, has been discussing the results of the smoking surveys distributed to students and faculty.

There were two separate surveys that were talked about at the previous meeting. One survey was given to the school's staff members consisting of administration, classified and faculty; students took the other survey. Both surveys contained the same questions.

The questions dealt with the current smoking policy and what changes should be made if any to the policy.

Students and faculty voiced similar opinions according to the results of the survey. It showed that both parties seem to agree that a change is in order stating the current policy was not restrictive enough, and that they would like to see designated smoking areas created on campus.

The results of the survey were looked over and everyone on the college council was told to go back to discuss the results with the people they are representing at the college council. They were given a month to think and talk to people in the groups they represent and come back for a final recommendation on what action should be taken, if any, on the smoking policy.
Things that have to be kept in mind when making the decision are things such as "if there are smoking zones, what does it look like and where will they be located," said Claire, who is also an administration representative at the college council. "We definitely want to create a responsible and respectful policy for everyone."

Fauzi Hamadeh, office assistant II at student activities, serves on the college council as a representative for the classified staff said he thinks that "although it has now become a campus issue, it seems as if it was influenced primarily by an outside group."

Groups like the Smoke Free San Mateo County Advocates and Breathe California are also pushing for a change of the smoking policy and have set out to educate students and faculty about the dangers of second hand smoke.

"I thought they did a good job with the information, and we will take it to consideration" said Claire.
