Dear Colleagues,
I thought it important to write to you in light of Monday's tragic event at Virginia Tech University. I cannot imagine the pain felt by the families of the victims and the by the Virginia Tech community. I know that our hearts go out to Virginia Tech as they cope with this loss. I want to remind you that the college has counseling services available if you or your students are having any difficulties as a result of this tragedy. In addition, the district offers an Employee Assistance Program (http://www.claremonteap.com/employee).

College of San Mateo is a safe campus and I very much appreciate the work of our security force as well as the excellent relationship with have with the San Mateo Police Department. In addition, the college has developed a comprehensive emergency response plan and most of our managers as well as key staff have participated in scenario training exercises. While we have a workable plan in place, I believe that we need to fully review and update our emergency response plan to incorporate the latest emergency response practices. For instance, we have had preliminary discussions at the district level on the creation of a text messaging system so that emergency information can be immediately communicated to our faculty, staff, and students. I also want to make sure that all personnel have had adequate training in emergency response. I have asked Virgil Stanford to work with the Safety Committee to review our current plan and to recommend changes where necessary.

The safety of our faculty, staff, students and administrators is of primary concern to me. I will be sure to keep you posted as we make progress on our emergency response plan
