Freshmen CSM shooting guard Hazel Mauk is used to excellence.

Mauk, 18, graduated from Mills High School with a 3.74 GPA, and was inducted into the Mills High School Hall of Fame for her performance in basketball.

During her time at Mills, the 5-foot-5-inch baller helped lead the Vikings to the Northern California tournament, averaging 13 points per game.

On the basketball court she is known for her stellar scoring and passing abilities, which she feels she learned from her older sister.

"I've been playing basketball since as long as I can remember," says Mauk. "I practiced with my sister's team growing up, until I could play in league games in the third grade."

While in grade school, Mauk also got to play basketball with current CSM teammate and friend Nadia Yuen.
Mauk and Yuen combined for an average of nearly 20 points per game for the Bulldogs this season, and were looked to as leaders.

"When Naudia and I play we are sort of like a one - two punch," says Mauk. "We played together growing up in grade school… On AAU teams, in Asian leagues, that helped us sort of build chemistry."

Despite the "one - two punch combination" of Mauk and Yuen, Mauk feels disappointed with how the season went. "We didn't do as good as we expected," said Mauk. "We had talent but lacked commitment."

But as she sees it, it was not all bad for the Bulldogs this season.

"The best game we played was against Reedly in our home tournament," says Mauk. " We ended up losing the game, but we fought hard and I was really proud of the team."

Mauk had 25 points against Reedly, who is widely considered one of the best women's junior college teams in Northern California.

The future looks bright for the Bulldogs though, as they are expecting at least five team members back next year, and are eyeing some talented new recruits. "I think the team will do better next year," says Mauk. "Hopefully I can be more consistent in my scoring."

Off the basketball court, Mauk enjoys sleeping, watching a lot of TV (her favorite channel is the Disney channel), and eating… a lot. "I love pasta," says Mauk. "But I'll eat almost anything."
When it comes to music, Mauk enjoys Hip Hop, Hyphy, and R&B.
"I like dancing to music… but I also like R&B," says Mauk. "It puts me in that sort of relaxed mood."

Mauk's idols include her mom, and former basketball coach Kelly Shea Gallo - who died from breast cancer on May 3, 2004. "My mom because she puts up with so much, I'm really grateful for what she's done," says Mauk. "Coach Gallo as well, because she taught me so much about life in general."

Mauk is currently following the UC Davis plan.

She is also looking into UC San Diego as well as UC Berkley, and plans on majoring in Bio Chemistry.
