Title: Multimedia Student Assistant
Age: 49
DOB: April 30, 1958
Birthplace: Vancouver, B.C., Canada
Favorite TV show: The First 48 and Dexter
Favorite Radio Station: Live 105
SM: What do you do at CSM, what is your position, title and purpose?
WM: I work in the Multimedia Lab as a Lab Aide. We do the mundane things like make sure the printers have paper, notify people to order supplies, sign out DV cams and related equipment; answer the phone, redirect the lost...you get the picture. We're also here to assist instructors in various ways so classes run smoothly; troubleshoot problems sometimes, provide peripherals they might need, make copies for them, and whatever needs doing. We're also there for the students that are having any hardware or software problems or if they're just having a problem learning an application.
SM: How long have you worked at CSM?
WM: About three, or maybe four semesters.
SM: What do you like about CSM, why did you choose to work here?
WM: It's always people who make or break anything! I've found some of the best (and nicest) instructors at CSM. Initially I came because the tuition is affordable, but it's definitely the instructors who would make me hesitate going anywhere else.
SM: What are your most memorable times working for CSM?
WM: Laughing so hard with my co-worker, Valerie, we thought we'd disrupt classes. Also, the time I almost electrocuted myself feeling around the walls in the dark, all because I couldn't find a light switch in a room that used to belong to Welding.
SM: Do you have siblings?
WM: Yes, I have an older sister who lives in Canada.
SM: Where did you grow up, where were you raised?
WM: I was born and raised in Vancouver. It's a beautiful city, but it rains way too much.
SM: Have you traveled out of; northern California, state, country? Where, and for what purpose?
WM: When I was 13, I traveled to Europe with my family. I'm a first born Canadian and have a lot of relatives in Germany, Czechoslovakia and Poland. As an adult, I've been to Louisiana (New Orleans), New York, Texas, (Austin & San Antonio), Tennessee (Memphis & Nashville), Florida (South Beach), as well as various places in Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho and Utah. I think that's it. Sometimes for vacation, other times to visit friends.
SM: What is one of the most memorable times of your life?
WM: When I was a kid, we used to rent a cabin on a lake for the summer. I was sitting outside the cabin while my family was out on the boat when a windstorm came up suddenly. An enormous old tree just cracked and fell over in front of me across the access road. It was amazing to see the power of nature.
SM: What are some of your hobbies and why?
WM: I enjoy photography and manipulating images with Photoshop for creative stimulation. When I can get there, I love hiking in the desert for the visual stimulation. I like reading to relax, and watching MMA and boxing just for fun.
SM: What is your favorite food and why?
WM: Mashed potatoes because they're comfort food for me.
SM: Do you own any pets?
WM: I love animals in general but I've always been a cat owner. I don't have any pets at the moment. It's so hard when they die. I haven't wanted to get another pet for that reason, and also want to be as mobile as possible because I don't know where I'll end up. I've always thought it would be terrific to have a lizard of some kind.
SM: What schools, colleges, and universities have you attended?
WM: Before I came to CSM, I earned a B.A. at Academy of Art in San Francisco where I studied visual effects for film.
SM: What kind of entertainment do you enjoy?
WM: Pubbing, watching horror or adventure movies at home, shooting at a rifle range, going on road trips, Burning Man and hanging out with friends.
SM: Who is your favorite actor and or actress?
WM: Too many to say, but I admire Hilary Swank, Gary Oldman, Sean Penn, John Turturro, and Robert De Niro is one of the all-time greats.
SM: Who is your favorite singer?
WM: Don't have a favorite singer, but I really like the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
SM: What is your favorite song?
WM: No favorite song. The latest one I really like would have to be "Survivalism" by NIN.
SM: Do you read? If so what kind of books?
WM: I mainly read textbooks these days but for amusement, I like classic horror (Poe), science fiction (Harlan Ellison), and non-fiction (anything on chaos theory).
