In an attempt to make CSM a more efficient learning institution, CSM will be downsizing academic divisions, and replacing three open dean positions.

College Council has approved moving from six divisions, to five. Business and Technology will now share one dean, and one division title and Social Science and Creative Arts will now share one dean, and one division title.

"This is a move to better reallocate college resources to where they are needed. It does give us an opportunity to save money down the road," said Michael Claire, CSM president.

The cause for such a drastic change comes at a convenient time. Before such changes were made, Language Arts, Business and Creative Arts, as well as Social Science divisions have had interim deans due to retirement and promotions.

Now that there are openings for new deans, CSM has decided to change around the divisions while they can.

"I've talked to a few faculty members, and a couple expressed concerns about the size of the new division," said Tom Diskin, College Council member.

Although some express concerns of the change, most of the impact will fall directly on deans of the two divisions and not the students, said Claire.

"Deans are very busy people, they work very hard, and know what they are doing," said Claire, in response to concerns about too much work for the new deans.

In order to ensure that the deans of each of the five divisions are able to focus their work on the divisions themselves, the college has created a Coast side Special Instructional Project, which will be located in Half Moon Bay.

The temporary dean of the new project in Half Moon Bay will oversee all side projects that would otherwise be handled by the division deans.

In order to fill the open dean positions efficiently, a hiring committee has been created.

"It's an open process and the screening committee will forward the finalists to me, and the Vice President to make the final decision," said Claire.

Changes will be made primarily over Winter break, and will be set forth during the spring semester. Administrative changes will have to be made, and pay roll will have to be adjusted.

"I'm not going to let the accounting system hold us up in moving forward as an institute," said Claire.
