Members of CSM's football team, along with the other community college football teams from San Mateo County, will attend and support a pledge to stop violence against women Wednesday Oct. 24 at the Menlo college campus in Atherton at 7:30 p.m.
"Football players have a bad rap (for violence against women). We are trying to get the younger players to pledge against violence," said Marla Lowenthal, professor of mass communications at Menlo College.
Each football team in the county was asked to attend the pledge, though attendance is not mandatory.
"We were asked to show up (at Menlo) to support the pledge," said head football coach Larry Owens.
The marketing and communication club from Menlo College is sponsoring the event, and the team that gets the most pledges from its players will win $500, said Lowenthal.
Several Hawaiian football players from Menlo will be playing music including the ukulele, said Lowenthal.
There will be many featured guests attending the pledge including former NFL player Jamie Williams, 3-time Super Bowl champion with the 49ers, and the Head of the NFL Alumni Association for the Bay Area, Steve Kinney.
Senator Leland Yee will also be in attendance to support the pledge as well as many other prominent figures within the fight to stop domestic violence against women.
