CSM's student-run first amendment newspaper and online publication was recognized Saturday, October 13, for General Excellence, the highest honor for a college publication at annual Northern California Journalism Association of Community College conference.
The San Matean attended the regional day-long conference held at San Jose State University, along with 21 other colleges and 260 students.
"It's wonderful to watch them improve over time and have others honor them for their efforts," said Ed Remitz, CSM journalism adviser.
The conference featured a wide variety of guest speakers, workshops and competitions.
The San Matean's award for General Excellence was based on its final three print issues and website from last spring. Current Online Editor Alexis Terrazas, 20, who served as Editor-in-Chief last spring, received an Honorable Mention for a profile feature story.
Current Editor-in-Chief, Danny Castro - competing in his first on-spot-competition - placed third in the opinion writing contest, where which about 25 students were given 50 minutes to complete their story.
Former San Matean Sports Editor, Chris Godowski, also earned an Honorable Mention in the category of Sports Game Story.
