Veterans coming home from active duty can now count on getting the classes they need at CSM, thanks to a new bill signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger earlier this month.

The bill provides priority registration to any military personnel within two years of leaving active duty. If you are a Veteran who qualifies for this benefit be sure to contact a certifying official in the Admissions and Records office for more detailed information.

Scheduled for Friday, Nov. 2 at 3 p.m. is a Pizza Hour for all Veterans attending classes at CSM. This will be held in Bldg. 1, Room 115. We are gathering Veterans to share suggestions, questions, and food with their fellow Vets and CSM school officials.

There is an increasing desire in our community to help our Vets transition from active duty into college and beyond.

Already 1.5 million individuals from around the country have served as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom (OIF/OEF). Admissions and Records' staff who certify Veteran's benefits are developing programs to help transition what is expected to be a growing number of military personnel returning home from active duty.

One approach to help veterans succeed is to develop a support network here at CSM. We would like to create a directory of faculty and staff who are Veterans or family members of Veterans and who are interested in serving as part of the support network.

Several students have also expressed interest in establishing a Veterans Club on campus. There is also the possibility of screening the HBO documentary Alive Day Memories: Home From Iraq and bringing a speaker to address the issue of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), which is described by medical professionals as the signature wound of the Iraq war due to the use of explosives against our soldiers.

If you are an interested Veteran, or are interested in welcoming home Veterans, please contact either of CSM's certifying officials: Jeremy Mileo, at mileo@smccd.edu or (650) 358-6858, or Mario Mihelcic at mihelcicm@smccd.edu or (650) 358-6856.
