The 'Dogs started out strong on both sides of the ball, however as the game went on they started to fall behind.
The opening quarter of the game remained exciting with the action going back and forth. With no score however, both teams fought hard to put the first points on the board.
"Each team was doing its best to get the job done," said Doug Boyett, Foothill head coach. "The defense and offense from both teams were playing with such heart and determination."
With the first quarter coming to an end, CSM and the Owls fought to gain points.
The first points were scored on an Owl field goal, bringing the score to 3-0. The 'Dogs Ernesto Lacayo returned the favor by kicking a tying field goal and bringing the score to 3-3. The first half of the game ended with the teams being tied.
The score remained tied through three quarters with each team scoring a touchdown, knotting the game at 10-10.
With the fourth quarter approaching, both teams knew that they needed to pick up the pace.
The fourth quarter, all the scoring was done by the Owls. The 'Dogs defense was no match for what the Owls offense brought to the table. "We wanted it more," said Pat Walsh of Foothill. "We fought harder and were able to maintain our stamina down to the very last seconds of the game."
In the process of scoring the final 10 points of the game, the Owls broke CSM's spirit, placing the game out of Bulldog reach. The final score of the game was 20-10 in favor of the Owls.
With this loss, the Bulldogs fall to sixth in the NorCal rankings, 10th in State, and tied for 25th in the nation with Iowa Central.
The Bulldogs, facing conference rivals City College of San Francisco, have a lot of work to do in order to defeat their upcoming competition. CCSF, who is ranked 4th in NorCal, will square off with CSM on Oct. 20. CCSF is the biggest game of the year and as long as the 'Dogs keep their head in the game and stay focused, they have a good chance at defeating their competition.
