Increased police presence on campus has made many students uneasy. The fight last week, which sent one student to the hospital and left others injured, has led many students to question their safety on campus. Though a certain amount of concern is appropriate, students should understand that the fight was an isolated incident.

Campus security, along with the San Mateo Police Department, has done a great job making sure that our students feel safe, and has worked extensively to prevent further incidents from occurring. The school has been spreading the word to students and faculty about Psychological Services that are that are currently offered on campus. These services are available to anyone who is feeling uneasy or distressed by what took place and can be attained by going to Bldg 1 Rm. 226.

Our campus administration has done an incredible job of making sure that faculty and students continue to have a safe environment to learn and work in. Aside from the available Psychological Services on campus, the constant visible presence of security guards on patrol is another safety reassurance to students and faculty alike.

College is first and foremost a place for learning, and the focus should continue to be just that. Community members should be able to behave like respectful adults, while remaining mindful of other students who are just trying to further their education, without walking the campus in fear.

In data provided by Campus Security for 2007-2008, no major violent crimes were reported between January 2006 - December 2006. The only crime that consistently shows up in the annual report every year is burglaries.

With all of that taken into consideration, we can all ease our minds and know that our college administrators is one of the safest around and it continues to make leaps and bounds in trying to make our community as safe as possible without infringing in our right to an education without fear.
