A new budget has been approved for the ASCSM. Funds come from the $8 student body fee, which gives students access to programs and events organized by the student senate.
According to Tiffany Won, the treasurer of the ASCSM, one of the more significant changes is the allocation of more money to the Programs and Services budget. "Our mission is to provide programs and services for students, so with that thought in mind, we approved a lot more money for services to do that," she said during an ASCSM meeting.
Oktoberfest and Spring Fling are two the most popular events sponsored by the ASCSM. According to Won, such events can cost anywhere from $8,000 to $10,000. ASCSM pays for the entire event.
The $8 student body fee also goes towards smaller events and pays for things such as the free food given away during many school events.
"There are so many perks and benefits that the student I.D. card, which everyone who pays the $8 student body fee gets, has that people are unaware of," Won said.
The budget is stage two of three. "Every year, the previous Student Senate drafts and approves a budget for the incoming Student Senate.
So with the whole year of experience of the Student Senate with what money was used for and how much was spent for each account, the budgets are usually well drafted with what is planned and in mind for the following year," Won said.
Matthew Kaidor, President of the ASCSM said the budget is "something that has to be done every semester. So it's mainly a 'business as usual' agenda item."
In developing the budget, the ASCSM tried to consider the wants of students.
"We have a lot of student input, but not in the form of a formal questionnaire or a survey or anything. It's more of an interaction of ideas," Won said.
Students interested in expressing an opinion on the budget are welcome to attend ASCSM meetings, which take place every Monday in the Student Activities center.
