Facebook and MySpace, two of the most popular social networking sites, now host pages for students interested in Cañada College events and developments. Robert Hood, Director of the Public Information Office at Cañada, set up the pages as a way to communicate with students and potential students in the way most convenient to them.

"Students have Facebook accounts. Students have MySpace accounts. So, it made a lot of sense for us to communicate that way," Hood said.

The groups, "Friends of Cañada College" and "Canada College," on Facebook and MySpace, respectively, are available for students, prospective students and community members to stay informed about campus news and events. Students interested in sharing information with the group can present it themselves, or consult Hood, who is available to help students write broadcasts for the groups.

Amanda Garcia, 18, an undeclared Cañada student, is excited about the groups. "I didn't know that this was available, but it sounds really cool. I don't usually know what's going on around campus. I think it's good because it will get more of the students involved with the school," she said "I know I'm not really involved that much, but I would like to be. If this can help with that at all, that would be pretty awesome."

Hood reports that the groups have been a success and he will continue to update them regularly. Though the groups don't have as much information as the District website or the official college page, they serve a different purpose.

"What we're trying to do is be a place where, first of all, students can get together and meet each other, and also find out information about the college that is quick and easy," Hood said.

Students may find the groups by searching for "Cañada College." The Facebook group currently has about 45 members and the MySpace group has about 60.

According to Matt Kaidor, president of the ASCSM, the student senate is currently focused on developing a website. "There has been talk of a Facebook page," said Kaidor.
