There is a new forum series that is being put on by CSM's Disabled Students Program & Services (DSPS). The "DSPS Brown Bag Lunch Series" is being introduced for the first time this semester.

This is not the first time that the DSPS has initiated events to spread awareness of people with disabilities.

Last semester, DSPS put together an October Disability Month. There were events every week BBQ and guest speakers throughout the month.

According to the DSPS flyer, the series will focus on educating faculty, students and staff about disability, develop classroom strategies and ask questions in an open and safe environment.

The objective of the series is to make CSM a more accessible place for students with disabilities.

The first event was titled "DSPS 101" which provided an overview of what the DSPS is all about. The forum included information about the laws effecting services for students, types of services available and strategies to make classes more accessible to students with disabilities."

"People aren't too educated about people with disabilities unless they are personally affected by it or someone in their family is affected," said Kevin Sinarle, DSPS Counselor. Hopefully these forums will produce participation by students across campus to further educate themselves about people with disabilities.

There will be two more events in the upcoming months. The second forum is titled, "Helping students with Psychological Disabilities succeed" and will be held on Wednesday, March 26 from 1-2 p.m. and will include information about psychological disabilities and strategies to help students with such disabilities in the classroom for both faculty and students.

The last event that will be held is called "Understanding ADD/ADHD and the implications for the college environment" which will be held on Tuesday, April 22 from 1-2 p.m.. This meeting will focus on the increasing populace of adults diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders. Topics that will be covered will include diagnostic criteria and the trouble that can be presented in the college environment.

All students and faculty are invited to attend these forums.

They are open to the community as a whole as well. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunches.
