CSM has implemented a new smoking policy in the Spring '08 semester.

The new policy provides designated smoking areas across campus, where Bldgs. 17 and 19 are where the majority of the population smokes at. The CSM catalog and class schedule has been updated to reflect the new policy.

"It is recognized that smoke from cigarettes, pipes and/or cigars is hazardous to health; therefore, it is the intent of the District to provide a smoke-free environment to the greatest extent possible," as stated in the 2007-2008 CSM catalog.

The new policy states that district managers are responsible for publicizing the new policy across campus to students and faculty and are responsible for putting up signs.

It is also the responsibility for all students and faculty to observe the new policy. Failure to recognize the guidelines will be looked at and treated in the samefashion as any other District rules and regulations and may result indisciplinary action.

There have been a number of approaches that have been undertaken to ensure that everyone adhere to the new policy. According to Jennifer Hughes, Vice President of Student Services, "Signs have been posted on campus to reflect the new policy with maps identifying the locations of the smoking areas."

An e-mail was sent to all registered students, faculty and staff at the beginning of the semester informing them of the new policy.

"As with any new policy, it will take a bit of time to make sure that everyone is aware of the new policy," stated Hughes.

The first approach that is being taken is to educate everyone of the new policy. "If students violate the policy, there are existing college policies that can be implemented."

"To date, students observed smoking in areas other than those designated have been very responsive when told about the new policy and indicated that they were not aware of the policy," said Hughes.

The Student Code of Conduct has also been revised to reflect these new laws. To further implement the new policy, there will be a painted border around each of the designated smoking areas, so that everyone will be aware of the perimeters of each designated area.

Although I admire the initiative, there is no protection from wind or rain in the designated smoking areas, nor is there sufficient room in one smoking area for all smokers between classes. (Continued…)
