The College of San Mateo was home to this season's firstNorthern California Rotational Track Meet. The meet was held on Friday, February 16th and began promptly at 1p.m.
The schools that showed up to the meet, including our own San Mateo Bulldogs were San Jose City College, City College of San Francisco, Butte College, Laney College and West Valley College.
The first event of the day was the long jump, and it came at a rocky start for the Bulldogs' male long jumpers, Johnathen Bough and Lawrence Chin. Bough had a few scratches coming out and a first jump of 16.7 feet (not even close to his personal record of 19.3 feet just set last year.)
"I don't think I did as well as I could've done, but this Friday I expect a super duper performance," said Bough as he warmed up for the day's practice.
Both Bough and Chin were able to end the meet on a good note with an 18.10 feet jump and a 13.02 feet jump.
Ashley Crittendon, the lone woman's long jumper for CSM ranked second place with her jump of 13.11 feet. Although the meet didn't seem to be as serious to the team as, say, the state championship, Coach Widstrand still saw it as a good learning experience for her team.
"We go into this like it's just another practice where we try to improve in what we're doing," says Widstrand.
One of the team's shining stars in the women's discuss, shot put, hammer, and javelin throws is Kelly Young.
Young, who recently had three personal lifetime records in the three field-throwing events made no exception to show her superior performance at Friday's meet.
Young was ranked first place in both women's javelin throw and women's hammer throw last Friday and threw just .43 meters behind first place in the Women's discuss throw event.
"She has definitely been making solid marks," said Widstrand.
On the track, the bulldogs' incurred a first place ranking in the Men's 800 meter dash by runner Jeff Grogan.
"We had an outstanding 800 by Jeff," said Widstrand. The Bulldogs, who seem to be quite strong in mid to long distance events, also had good times in the Women's 1500 meter run and the Men's 1500 meter run where they finished in third place and first place.
"Overall I think the team had a good meet, we had several pr's," said Widstrand. "Its only their third meet and the kids keep improving." The Bulldogs' are going to have to continue to improve in all of their events, especially with the Nor Cal trials and state's right around the corner.
