Hayward - The Bulldogs held their own on a rainy Feb. 22 at Chabot in the first duel meet of the season.

"It was a good meet," said Randy Wright, CSM head coach. "It's the first duel meet of the conference season, so it is important that we do get comfortable in the duel meet format."

Not having any divers in the meet, CSM still managed to win six swimming events.

"This gave us the chance to swim the long events today," said Wright. "So we were able to get good early season long distance times, which will be important so that you can pat yourself on the back later when you do better than those times at the end of the season."

The women were led by sophomore swimmer Marisha Driscoll. Driscoll, who won three medals at Coast Conference last season, won the 200 individual medley in 2:08 and 200 back stroke in 2:41.

"I guess I was pretty good," said Driscoll. "I think it was better than my practice time so I'm satisfied with that. I thought this was the school that was going to kick our butts, but it feels great."

On the men's side, sophomores Mike Shannon and Daniel Nordson each won an event, the 400 individual medley and the 100 freestyle. But sophomore swimmer Steven Camargo led the way for the Bulldogs; winning two events including the 200 freestyle in 2:08.

"Usually I always save my energy till the end," said Camargo, "I try to pace whoever's ahead and then towards the end on the last 50, and, on the last 25, I just let it go. I need to focus on my turn a little bit. Slip sometimes and I need to focus on that."

Last year, the women finished second in Coast Conference, but after a loosing nine swimmers to graduation, it will be difficult to get back to where they were.

As for the men, who finished near the bottom last year, they looked to have bounced back. Wright believes they have the potential to finish in third.

"Usually we are more women dominant because of women's Water Polo," said Wright, "but just with the graduation and cycle to things, this year it's the guys turn to see if they can crack the top three."
