The Lady Dogs swept a doubleheader Feb. 23 against the San Joaquin Delta Mustangs; 7-2 in game one, and 6-3 in game two.
"It's tough playing in the rain but I think we did alright," said CSM Head Coach Nicole Borg. "We defiantly didn't hit the ball as hard as we should have, but I think we're coming around. We're beginning to put things together. Two wins is two wins."
In game one, the lady dogs took a 3-2 lead in the first inning and never gave it back; scoring four runs in the fifth and sixth inning to guarantee victory. Outfielder Amanda Johnson led the way for CSM; going 3/4 with a stolen base and scored two runs.
"Amanda Johnson did really well in the first game," said Borg. "She had three hits, and she batted in the lead off spot. That's what you want from your lead off spot, to get on base as many times as possible."
In game two, CSM led 3-0 for three innings until Delta tied it up; scoring two runs in the fourth inning, and one in the fifth. But the lady dogs came barking back and scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth , until the game was called due to rain.
Even though CSM won both games, it was not with their hitting, but with their defense that helped defeat the Mustangs; committing one error in the rain.
"I think our defense is coming together," said Outfielder Angela Woez. "I think we are focusing more on the fundamentals. If you build on the fundamentals you just get stronger."
"Our defense has picked it up," said Borg. "We have to put everything together, pitching, hitting, and fielding. There's three aspects to the game and we haven't found all three of them yet, but we'll get there."
With the defense starting to solidify, CSM could become a strong contender. But all three phases of the game have to come together in order for them to achieve that goal.
"Compared to the start of this year, I think our defense is improving," said Johnson. "We're making the next play."
